American destroyer joins large-scale military exercise in the Black Sea this week
A total of 12 Romanian military ships, an American destroyer, a sea dredger from Bulgaria and some 1,500 troops conduct this week specific battle actions for the defense of sea communications.
American destroyer USS Ross came to Constanta harbor last weekend, its second visit in the past 12 month, after a previous one in September 2014. The American ship is the star of this week’s exercise in the Black Sea.
The military drills, part of the Trident Poseidon 2015 exercise, are carried out in Romania’s territorial waters and the international waters of the Black Sea between May 25 and May 28.
The exercise aims to strengthen the level of interoperability between NATO forces, as well as the interagency cooperation in Romania, in an environment with multiple threats, according to a statement of the Romanian Naval Forces.
The program includes an exercise that targets non-combatants evacuation from a conflict area. This action will take place in Constanta Military Port on May 27.
