First new airport in Romania in 50 years launches operations in Brașov

Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport was officially inaugurated on Thursday morning, June 15. A Tarom plane piloted by Cătălin Prunariu, the son of cosmonaut Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, carried out the inaugural flight, landing at the new airport at 08:10.

Senate president Nicolae Ciucă, Braşov County Council head Adrian Veştea (recently appointed minister of development), transport minister Sorin Grindeanu, and other officials attended the inauguration. Moreover, on this occasion, Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu received the title of Honorary Citizen of Brașov County.

Brașov Airport is the first built in Romania in the last 50 years. It is also the first in Eastern Europe where air traffic is routed remotely through the Remote Tower system.

The investments in the airport summed up to EUR 140 million.

Low-cost carriers Wizz Air and Dan Air also announced flights from the new airport.

Dan Air, a little-known Romanian company, operates flights from Brașov to Nuremberg, Munich, Barcelona, Brussels and Stuttgart. Initially, the company announced more destinations, but some were cancelled, according to Hotnews.ro. Wizz Air announced flights from Brașov to London Luton and Dortmund.
