Emergency Inspectorate: Only 5 Bucharest public schools have fire safety permit
Out of the 403 public schools in Bucharest, five have a fire safety permit, while 317 are open without such a permit, according to data from the Bucureşti-Ilfov Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU), quoted by News.ro. Of the public schools, 81 do not require a permit.
At the same time, of the capital’s 226 private schools, 25 have a fire safety permit, 179 do not, and 22 do not require such a permit.
Among the over 300 public schools without a permit is the 124 School in Bucharest's Rahova neighbourhood, which was destroyed by a fire yesterday night, May 28. The fire started at the building's rooftop, which had been built on a wooden structure. The school was in need of a permit from ISU since 2001, when refurbishment works took place.
An emergency government ordinance issued in 2016 currently foresees the buildings and spaces set up for educational purposes that have a surface wider than or equal to 150 sqm need to have a fire safety permit.
