The nurse who was working at the Giulesti maternity intensive care ward when the fire that killed five new born babies started last week was arrested for 29 days and accused of third degree murder and of having caused serious injuries. The decision can be challenged in court.

After focusing on opening supermarkets since the beginning of the year, French retailer Carrefour will open a new hypermarket in Romania. The retailer's 23rd unit will be located in Drobeta Turnu Severin and will cover 7,100 sqm. This is the first hypermarket opened by Carrefour in the last year and a half. The opening is scheduled for Wednesday, August 25, within Severin Shopping Center. The retailer did not announce the value of the investment in this new store.

Romania's car production could go up by as much as 75 percent in 2014 compared to last year, to around 520,000 units produced locally, according to a recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). This would be the third fastest growth pace in Central and Eastern Europe.

Utilities, oil and gas and pharmaceutical companies had the best performances in the first half of the year among the Bucharest Stock Exchange listed companies, according to a recent report by brokerage company Tradeville. Chemical, metallurgical and car industries, which posted poorer financial results, but which witnessed a positive variation against the BET index.

The Wall Street Journal has recently published an article about a Romanian playing in the US National Football League, Zoltan Mesko. State-owned company Nuclearelectrica, which administrates the two nuclear reactors in Cernavoda, posted a loss of around EUR 46 million in the first six months of the year. The company turned to loss after making a gross profit of around EUR 25.6 million in the first six months of last year.

Feature length movie 'Mar negro' ('Black Sea'), a Romania- France – Italy co-production, directed by Federico Bondi, will be screened from September 17 in Bucharest and in Cluj. The Bucharest premiere screening will be organized at the Studio cinema in Bucharest on September 16.

A new relaxation and concert area called Little Riviera (Mica Riviera) opened last week-end near Unirii Square in Bucharest. The relaxation area, a project created by the Bucharest city hall, is across the street from Unirea Shopping Center, near Dambovita river.
