Romanian defense minister says compulsory military training comes up more frequently

08 August 2018

Reintroducing compulsory military training in Romania is a theme that comes up more frequently in internal talks at the Defense Ministry, defense minister Mihai Fifor said on Tuesday, August 7.

He added that this initiative hasn’t yet been presented to the Government and this discussion won’t come up soon, and that the Defense Ministry has been trying to encourage voluntary military service, local Digi24 reported. However, he pointed out that conscription is suspended and not cancelled in Romania.

Compulsory military training was cancelled in Romania in 2007. Some EU and NATO countries, including Germany and France, have been pondering reintroducing conscription in recent years. Sweden already took this measure last year.
