Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep, number 3 in the WTA ranking, beat Czech star Petra Kvitova (no. 9 WTA) in the third match of the Fed Cup encounter between Romania and the Czech Republic, in Cluj-Napoca, on Sunday.
Halep had a difficult match against Kvitova and needed over 2 hours to win. The final score was 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 for the Romanian.
Simona Halep had lost her first match against Karolina Pliskova on Saturday, but Monica Niculescu kept Romania’s hopes alive with a victory against Petra Kvitova.
Niculescu plays against Pliskova in the fourth match and has the chance to take Romania to the Fed Cup semifinals if she wins. Otherwise, the winner will be decided after the doubles match.
