Romanian director Florin Serban gets critics' award at Karlovy Vary film festival
Box (Boxing), the second movie directed by Romanian Florin Serban, won the International Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. The drama follows the stories of a talented 19-year-old boxer, and a 30-something mother who finds herself at a critical moment in her life.
Florin Serban’s first movie, If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle, was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival and won the Jury Grand Prix Silver Bear and the Alfred Bauer Prize. Serban is currently developing his third feature, America, according to information on the festival’s website.
The Magic Mountain, directed by Romanian Anca Damian, and Nicolae Constantin Tanase’s The World is Mine also won special jury mentions at this year’s edition of the film festival.
The 50th edition of Karlovy Vary International Film Festival took place between July 3 and July 11. The festival’s grand prize went to American feature film Bob and the Trees.
