Online transactions with cards issued in Romania reached EUR 800 million last year, 40 percent more than in 2010. Around EUR 600 million of these payments were made outside the country, according to Catalin Cretu, general manager of Visa Romania. “The numbers tell us Romanians trust online payments and buy more and more from online shops, especially from outside Romania. The increasing trend will continue in 2012, and the value of transactions with cards issued in Romania will exceed EUR 1 billion,” said Cretu.

Online payments with Visa cards reached a peak on November 28 and December 12 last year. There were 29,600 transactions on December 12, 43 percent more than the day before, and the value of the online transactions with cards issued in Romania stood at EUR 1.4 million on November 28, 42 percent higher day-to-day, according to Cretu. The busiest day for payments with Visa cards at POS was December 23, with 316,000 transactions worth EUR 12.8 million.
