Investigation into the Romanian Revolution in 1989, still unfinished

24 December 2014

Twenty five years after the Romanian Revolution, investigations about the "December 1989" events that led to the fall of Communism haven'tbeen concluded. There are still many questions left about the people who were behind the events and, especially, who is guilty of the deaths of more than 1,000 Romanians, according to Romanian media agency Mediafax.

The 1989 Revolution investigation file reached the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which stated in one of its 2011 decisions that Romania has an inadequate legislation for collecting and keeping personal data by the intelligence services.

Prosecutors from the Military Prosecutor's Office are currently investigating the December '89 events, after they took  over this investigation from the Prosecution Department of the Prosecution Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice in March this year, when the new Criminal Procedure Code entered into force.

The Prosecutor General of Romania, Tiberiu Nitu, recently said that the Revolution investigation is still pending, adding that the former President Ion Iliescu, one of the central figures of the Revolution and the first president after the fall of Communism, was not yet heard in this case.
