President: Romanian Land Forces’ endowment to undergo modernization

26 April 2022

The endowment of the Romanian Land Forces will undergo modernization so that the most complex of missions can be carried out successfully, president Klaus Iohannis said in a message issued on April 25.

“The Land Forces have an important role in increasing the operational capacity of our army; a constant and sustained effort is needed for the intensive and efficient training of military units in complex conditions, including in an allied environment. At the same time, the endowment will undergo accelerated modernization so that the most complex of missions can be carried out successfully,” the president said.

Increasing the country’s defense capacity is a strategic priority, and a reason for the decision to increase the defense spending from 2% to 2.5% of the GDP starting next year, he explained.

The president referenced the “complicated security context” generated by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and said “additional, strictly defensive measures” are needed.

He also mentioned the decision taken at the NATO summit on March 24 regarding the establishment of a battle group in Romania and said the country “will continue to be an important provider of security and stability in South-Eastern Europe and at a Euro-Atlantic level.”
