Jean Paul Gaultier on Romanian contestant's show at Eurovision: extravagant and somehow unusual

20 May 2013

Romania's performance at Eurovision song competition this year triggered various reactions, such as the one of the French designer Jean Paul Gaultier.  Cezar Ouatu’s show at Eurovision was “extravagant and somehow unusual”, said the French designer for the public television channel TVR.

Cezar Ouatu (in picture) ranked 13th at this year’s Eurovision contest, with the song It’s My Life. However, his outfit consisting in a long black cloak created by Romanian designer Doina Levintza, as well as his show, caught the eye of the international media.

Speaking about Eurovision, bbc.co.uk wrote: “One of the more eccentric acts was Romania's Cezar, who mixed his operatic voice with a disco beat. He managed a respectable 13th position”, while, according to The Guardian, Romania’s contestant was “dressed like a vampiric Elvis” and he “sang in an alarming falsetto surrounded by men and women dancing in tight lycra”. Mirror.co.uk writes that “Cezar would win the award for most bizzare performance with a vampire-theme pop-opera display.”

Denmark won this year’s edition of Eurovision, organized in Malmo, Sweden. Emmelie de Forest’s song Only Teardrops got a total of 281 points. Azerbaijan ranked second with 234 points, while Ukraine came on the third place with 214 points.
