06 August 2014

A Romanian from the village of Cacica, in the Northern county of Suceava, recently discovered some 350 old silver coins, the largest Dacian treasure ever to be found in Romania, according to the Bucovina Museum director, quoted by Agerpres.

The treasure, estimated to be 2,300 years old, was handed over to the Bucovina Museum, which will have to compensate the founder with 30% of the treasure’s value. The man, Paul Croitoru, found the coins near a forest close to the village by using a metal detector only. The treasure include 309 raw silver coins and 40 fragments, in total 1.5 kilos of silver.

The coins are similar to drachmas, with dimensions between 15 and 22 mm, and feature a Dacian character, and a horseback rider.

The whole treasure is worth some EUR 150,000 on the black market, according to local media. The compensation value per coin is of USD 100, according to experts quoted by Agerpres, which means the founder stands to make some USD 35,000.
