Low cost airline Wizz Air moves flights to Bucharest Otopeni airport, increases prices
Low cost airline Wizz Air will move its flights from Baneasa Airport to Otopeni Airport on March 25, 2012. After this date, the price of tickets for the company’s flights abroad will double and even triple, according to calculations made by Zf.ro. Wizz Air representatives announced that the prices will go up to about 4 percent, but, on some destinations, the ticket prices are similar to the one charged by the state company Tarom, writes Zf.ro.
The low-cost flights’ transfer from the smaller Baneasa airport North of Bucharest to the main airport for the capital city –the Otopeni airport, was announced last year by Romania’s Transport Ministry. The move will be enforced from March 2012, said the Ministry. The Baneasa airport will become a city airport for VIP flights until 2015, according to the Ministry’s plan.
Wizz Air carried 2.7 million passengers to and from Romania in 2011, up 29 percent compared to the previous year. Wizz Air, which operates 51 routes in Romania, has also announced new ones for 2012: Bucharest - Verona (Italy) and Bucharest - Palma de Mallorca (Spain).
