Romania’s Parliament adopts new Forestry Code
Lumber theft will become a crime, regardless of the value of the damage, under the new Forestry Code adopted by the Parliament on Wednesday, August 19.
The trucks that carry trees cut illegally can be confiscated, according to the same bill, Hotnews.ro reported.
"Today, we won an extremely important fight for Romania's forests. Very recently, the Parliament approved the draft law amending the Forestry Code. In recent weeks, I have repeatedly asked my colleagues in Parliament to urgently vote this law, which makes the transition from a Forestry Code that is permissive with criminals to one in which no one talks to them anymore. I am glad that our message resonated and that MPs understood that protecting forests is a priority beyond political interests and calculations," said environment minister Costel Alexe, co-initiator of the bill.
