President Basescu sends Pension Law back to Parliament

08 October 2010

Romanian president Traian Basescu has decided to send the unified pension law back to Parliament for debates on grounds that the retirement age for women should be 63 not 65 as set in the act.  The President explained that the Romanian social reality proves women have a second job at home. 'Women do double work in Romania', Basescu said at the presidential Cotroceni Palace. He also stressed he has no observation as to the lawfulness of the pension act.

The leaders of the opposition parties - the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Victor Ponta and the National Liberal Party (PNL) Crin Antonescu - have both asked the president lately to send back to Parliament the law on the unified public pension system, which on Wednesday was ruled constitutional, despite the Opposition's constitutional objections.
