Restoration of famous Constanta casino to cost over EUR 23 mln, development minister says

27 March 2019

The estimated contract value for the restoration of the famous casino in the Romanian seaside city of Constanta amounts to over RON 110 million (more than EUR 23 million), according to development minister Vasile Daniel Suciu.

The minister also said that the government decision for this project will be issued in late April - early May, and then the auction for the modernization of this monument can begin, local News.ro reported.

Present at the same press conference where the development minister announced the project’s cost, Constanta mayor Decebal Fagadau said that the fourth tender for the restoration of this monument could start in May. The third tender to renovate and consolidate the casino was blocked in 2017 after it was contested by one of the bidders.

The local councilors in Constanta adopted in mid-February this year a decision according to which the City Hall will allocate some EUR 3.1 million for the project of consolidation and restoration of the casino.

The casino in Constanta was built in 1910, being designed by Swiss-Romanian architect Daniel Renard in the Art Nouveau style. Although a landmark of the Black Sea shore, the building was abandoned during the 2000s, currently being in a very bad shape. It was transferred about four years ago from the municipality to the National Investment Company so that it can be restored but all three tenders organized since then were blocked after being contested.
