Rise Project: Former Mossad agents allegedly spy on Romania’s chief anticorruption prosecutor

06 April 2016

Four Israeli citizens are investigated in Romania for allegedly spying and trying to discredit the National Anticorruption Directorate – DNA’s chief prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, according to Romanian investigative journalism team Rise Project.

Laura Codruta Kovesi said that the former Mossad agents' actions were "an unsuccessful intimidation attempt" on her, according to Mediafax.

Two of the suspects, Dan Zorella and Avi Yanus, are former Israeli secret service officers. They are the co-founders and executive directors of the Israeli private investigation firm Black Cube. The Israeli secret service Mossad’s former director Meir Dagan worked with this firm in the past and was the firm’s honorary president until March this year when he died, according to Rise Project investigation.

According to the Romanian prosecutors, Dan Zorella and Avi Yanus together with several Black Cube employees, including Ron Weiner and David Geclowicz, have set up an organized crime group that harassed and carried cyber-attacks on Romania’s chief anticorruption prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi. Weiner and Geclowicz have already been arrested in Romania.

The two apparently carried out field operations in Romania, in March, and even hacked the email accounts of three of Kovesi’s closest.

The investigation is still in a preliminary phase, and the Romanian prosecutors are trying to determine who hired Black Cube to start this operation against Kovesi, according to the chief prosecutor of the Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), quoted by Rise Project.

Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has been investigating many corruption cases in recent years, some of them also involving international investors and companies. Several influential Israeli businessmen have also been investigated by DNA.
