Romania - Bulgaria Danube bridge damaged, heavy vehicles stopped
Traffic has been restricted and heavy vehicles barred on the Giurgiu – Rusu bridge over the Danube after a large hole appeared in the road. The bridge connects Romania and Bulgaria and has reportedly been damaged by floodwater on the Danube River.
Vehicles of over 7.5 tonnes cannot use the bridge and other traffic has been restricted to one lane, according to the Romanian police, who recommend using the Vama Veche border crossing.
Bulgarian news organization Novinite.com reports that a hole of around 1 meter diameter and 80cm depth appeared last night (April 7 ).
The authorities have issued a code orange alert on the Danube from the Iron Gates and Zimnicea, valid until April 12, and a code yellow alert for branches of the river in Mehedinti, Olt, Virginia Giurgiu, Calarasi, Ialomita, Braila, Galati, Constanta and Tulcea.
