Romania sends its tennis stars to 2016 Rio Olympic Games
Nine Romanian tennis players, two of whom men, will represent their country at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the Romanian Tennis Federation (FRT) recently announced. The nine are Romania's best-ranked tennis players in the world, with three of them in the top ten worldwide.
The Romanian team is made of Simona Halep - number 5 in the WTA ranking of best female tennis players in the world and the best ranked Romanian tennis player; Irina Begu- number 35 WTA, Monica Niculescu- seed 34 WTA, Horia Tecău - number 3 ATP doubles, Florin Mergea - ranked 11th ATP doubles, Alexandra Dulgheru - number 93 WTA, Andreea Mitu- ranked 112th, Raluca Olaru - 46th WTA doubles, and Sorana Cîrstea - ranked 148th WTA.
The eligible athletes are to appoint their coaches or the persons who will accompany them, according to FRT’s statement.
The summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will start on August 5 and end on August 21. More about Romania in the Olympic Games here.
