Romania to create center for prevention and treatment of stress – related disorders for the military

13 May 2014

Romania aims to fight stress among the military with a new center for social and behavioral investigations.

The Defense Ministry (MAPN) will create such a center, which will train personnel psychologically, as well as provide psychological counseling and psychotherapy to military staff with specific symptoms of dysfunctional behavior, the Ministry announced.

It does not mention however  whether this is a response to an increasing number of stress- related cases, and/or incidents resulting from post-traumatic stress.

This type of stress is among the most frequent disorders related to military activity. Romania however does not have any army staff officially diagnosed with post traumatic street, according to existing media reports.

In a story and public awareness campaign published in 2013, Romanian newspaper Gandul revealed that the rate of post-traumatic stress disorder diagnostic in Romania was zero, compared to 20 percent among US military, and 8 percent among Canadians.

The recent announcement by the Defense Ministry is among the first steps done in this direction by Romanian officials.
