Romanian Government to support fight against transport “piracy”
Romania’s Government decided yesterday that an inter-ministerial work group would come up soon with legislative proposals to fight the “piracy” cases signaled by road carriers, said Government spokesman Liviu Iolu.
The work group will consist of representatives from several ministries, namely the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Economy, and the European Affairs Department.
The road carriers complained about the competition of “pirate” transport services and services such as Uber. The confederation of road carriers (COTAR) postponed a protest planned for yesterday in Bucharest, following talks with the Government representatives, which seemed “open” to finding solutions to the demands of the road carriers’ organizations.
Uber representatives say that they are also discussing with the authorities and that a clear legislation for alternative transport activities is needed. A group of MPs recently proposed several changes to the transport law, which would make ridesharing legal in Romania. This has angered the transporters’ associations.
