Romanian Post employees’ protest generates EUR 1 mln losses

31 October 2016

The Romanian Post employees’ protest has led to losses of EUR 1 million in only a few hours, according to the company.

Thousands of postal workers stopped work on Thursday asking the company’s management for higher wages. The protests continued on Friday, with some 15,000 of the Post’s employees involved.

The management has come up with two proposals for increasing the salaries, namely to offer wage growths ranging between RON 60 (EUR 13) and RON 200 (EUR 44.4), or between RON 60 and RON 140 (EUR 31). Both alternatives would be applied starting January 1, next year, reports local Agerpres.

The measure would apply to some 22,300 employees who have salaries between RON 1,250 (EUR 278) and EUR RON 2,202 (EUR 489). The employees with the lowest salaries would get the highest salary increase, namely RON 200, according to the post’s management. The ones with wages of RON 2,202 would get RON 60.

The management also said that the protest was “outside the legal framework”, and has “significantly affected the activity” of the postal operator, which hasn’t been able to honor some of its contracts.
