Romanian student takes gold at Chemistry Olympics, six medals overall for Romania

Romanian students have again proved their scientific prowess, reaping a fine crop of medals at the Chemistry Olympiad. The Romanian team won a gold, two silvers and three bronze medals at the International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, held between April 24 and April 30.

After winning a silver medal last year, Andreea Maria Filip, an eleventh grade pupil at the Bucharest Liceul International de Informatica, went one better and took a gold medal in the competition, according to Romanian news site Hot News. Marei Ioana Esanu, a student at the Roman Voda College, and Grigore Mihai Pruna, who attends the Vasile Lucaciu College, both won silver medals in Tashkent. Meanwhile, the three bronze medals went to Teodora Coroama, Vlad-Mihai Mandriva and Stefan Bogdan Ivan. Another Romanian student Mara Ioana alsoi won a special prize for the highest practice test score, according to Hot News.

This year's event was the 47th Chemistry Olympiad and was again held in Central Asia, after last year's competition in Kazakhstan. This year, nearly 120 students from 17 countries took part in the competition, in which they had to complete two practical exercises and a written test. Members of the Romanian team were invited to the Romanian Embassy and congratulated by the ambassador Romeo Stanciu after the event.
