Thieves steal over EUR 37,000 from famous medieval castle in Romania
Thieves managed to steal RON 170,000 (more than EUR 37,000) from the ticket office of famous Corvinilor Castle in Romania, the money representing the value of tickets tourists had bought over the weekend to visit the medieval castle, reports local News.ro.
Hunedoara Police is currently investigating this case. “The Police are carrying out investigations on charges of qualified theft. Unidentified individuals broke into the ticket area of Corvinilor Castle and stole the weekend revenues. A criminal case was opened,” said Bogdan Nitu, Hunedoara County Police Inspectorate spokesperson.
Corvinilor Castle's management has a contract with a security company, but the security guards didn’t react in time, according to News.ro. They announced the disappearance of the money on Tuesday morning, although the theft is believed to have happened on Monday night.
Located in Hunedoara, Corvinilor Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Romania. The building features tall and strong defense towers, bastions, an inner courtyard, and a drawbridge.
The castle is a frequent stage for festivals, opera, and other performances. Moreover, several films have been shot at the castle, as well as commercials and even a virtual reality production. Most recently, American actors Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Aaron Eckhart came to Romania in mid-January to shoot a commercial at Corvinilor Castle.
The castle could be restored with EU funds.
