U.S. Embassy releases first photos of the military base in Deveselu to be opened this year in Romania
The U.S. Navy and Romanian constructors are working on finishing the military base in Deveselu, which will become operational this year. The U.S. Embassy recently posted some photos of the construction site on its Facebook page.
The construction work on the military base started in October 2013 and the value of the contract was USD 134 million. American company Kellog Brown & Root Services is the general contractor.
In October 2014, the U.S. Navy officially took control of the base, which will host radars and rocket launchers. About 200 military and civil personnel will work in the compound, which covers a 174-hectare area.
The Deveselu military base will host the Ashore Missile Defense System that will provide ballistic missile coverage of Southern Europe. It will be able to deter or defeat ballistic missile threats to U.S. allies and partner nations in the region.
