Romanian PM’s adviser gets fine for offending protester

28 March 2019

The National Council for Combating Discrimination (CNCD) has fined Darius Vâlcov, a former finance minister and a current economic adviser of prime minister Viorica Dăncilă, for offending a protester in September of last year.

He received a fine of RON 1,000 (EUR 210) for using a derogatory term (sandilău - crazy) to refer to the protester. Vâlcov also published the protester’s medical record on Facebook. CNDC called the acts “discriminatory and contravening to the right to dignity.”

Sandu Matei, the protester whose medical record Vâlcov published, is one of the leaders of the #rezist movement. He filed a legal complaint against Vâlcov and is requesting EUR 1 million in damages, Digi24.ro reported.

In the complaint, Vâlcov is targeted for complicity to divulging a professional secret, to abuse of office, and to unrightfully divulging secret professional information. Matei also complained on having his right to a private life infringed.

He explained that the record Vâlcov published on Facebook was issued by an expert committee in a retirement decision.
