Romania's Central Bank BNR revised upward its forecast on the annual inflation to 3.6 percent at the end of 2011, from 3.4 percent previously, Romanian Central Bank governor Mugur Isarescu (in picture) said Monday. For 2012, the bank forecasts an annual rate of 3.2 percent, Isarescu said at the presentation of the quarterly inflation report.

Tomohiro Nakashima is the new general manager of Sony Romania, having replaced Taiju Ishikawa from the beginning of February. Nakashima, 38, is the country head Eastern Balkans & Romania, Sony Central and Southeast Europe and will also supervise the Romanian activities.

Romania's industrial output went up by 12 percent last year, mostly due to growth in the manufacturing industry, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. The mining industry took a nosedive of 5.3 percent last year on 2009.

Vulcan mountain resort in Romania, one of the newest such resorts in the country, has received a new cable car, part of a larger ski resort development program financed by the Tourism Ministry and the local city council. The cable car was however stuck during the inauguration ceremony last week-end, due to a broken sensor.

IT&C distribution company Asesoft Distribution posted a turnover of EUR 145 million in 2010 and hopes it will reach EUR 165 million in 2011, the company has announced. Last year's results reflected a 45 percent increase on the previous year. The company thus targets a 14 percent turnover increase on an IT&C distribution market which is expected to grow by 10 percent.

Five Romanian senators have drafted a bill requiring psychological and psychiatric examinations of all candidates for public office, including presidential candidates. The bill would also oblige people holding public office to undergo annual medical check-ups in order to keep their positions.

Romanian President Traian Basescu ha said Romania will not ask to be considered for Schengen separately from Bulgaria, even though reports show Romania has met all technical criteria and Bulgaria hasn’t. "We do not want a split from Bulgaria and we will not seek one," said Basescu after a European Council meeting in Brussels. He added political games to have Romania considered separately would not do anyone any good.

Romania will not draw the last installment of its loan from the International Monetary Fund, of EUR 1 billion, and will use only the disbursement from the European Union, Romanian president Traian Basescu said on Sunday evening.

The five miners missing in the Saturday afternoon explosion at the Uricani mine, southern Romania, have been killed in the blast, said local mayor Danut Buhaescu. He added rescuers were struggling to bring out the bodies, which have been dismembered in the powerful blast. The five were electricians and were apparently servicing an electric transformer when the explosion occurred.
